AQA-HQA Steering Committee Workgroups
August 17, 2006
As discussed in the initial AQA-HQA Steering Committee Meeting that took place on August 4, 2006, five work groups are being established that will help focus attention on particular efforts that are needed to accomplish the goals set forth for by the Committee.
Information about each work group is listed below, along with the names of the chairperson(s). If you would like to participate on one or more of the workgroups, please send an e-mail indicating your interest to Howard Holland and Marybeth Farquhar at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (howard.holland@ahrq.hhs.gov; marybeth.farquhar@ahrq.hhs.gov). Be sure to include the name of the work group that you are interested in serving on.
Pilot Expansion Work Group
- Chaired by: Peter Lee, PBGH
- This work group will focus on expanding the number and scope of AQA pilot sites. It will develop a plan for expansion that includes both ambulatory and hospital care that can facilitate assessing quality across episodes of care. This group will also develop criteria that will be used for selection and prioritization of additional sites for pilot expansion.

Measure Harmonization Work Group
- Chaired by: Janet Corrigan, NQF
- This work group will focus on identifying measures where measure specifications are different and develop a plan to reconcile measurement specifications/definitions across ambulatory and hospital settings. This plan should also include methods/processes for on-going harmonization of measures across settings as well as a way to refresh the measures and retire them.
Pilot Infrastructure Support Work Group
- Chaired by: Chris Querum, Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare
- This work group will focus on identifying ways in which to provide support to the pilot sites in terms of an infrastructure. This group may investigate existing avenues such as the QIOs, contractor, and local support that would sustain the pilot sites. In addition this group would develop a plan to track and provide ongoing evaluation the pilot sites. Data collection and aggregation should also be included in the plan.
Efficiency/Episodes of Care Work Group
- Co-Chaired by: Kevin Weiss and Representative of Hospitals/Hospital Systems (TBD)
- This work group will focus on developing a comprehensive approach to efficiency that will include examination of the overall system, group and individual physician. In order to get at the issue of efficiency, episodes of care need to be evaluated. This work group will develop a plan to evaluate episodes of care and efficiency of services as well as primary responsibilities for the care provided i.e., system, physician, or jointly between physician and system.
Cost-Pricing Transparency Work Group
- Co-Chaired by: Debra Ness, National Partnership for Women & Families and Bruce Bradley, GM
- This work group will focus on the costs of care and reporting the costs/price of care to the public. The group will investigate what the issues surrounding reporting costs/pricing to consumers are as well as develop a plan to implement reporting in these areas.
